Throwback Thursday – The Doyen of Irish Funfairs 🎡
This week’s throwback takes us to a press reception at the Imperial Hotel, Cork, where the legendary William “Jumbo” Perks was honoured for his remarkable career in the world of funfairs.
Jumbo started out with his wife Violet in the 1920s, touring Ireland with steam-powered rides, organs, and swing boats — bringing joy to towns all over the country. From humble beginnings to introducing iconic rides like the Striker, Jumbo quickly became a household name in the showman world.
By the 1950s, he made Youghal his base, rolling into town with the famous Showboat Express, and over the years helped build what is now one of the largest indoor entertainment centres in Ireland.
His dedication didn’t go unnoticed — he was the first ever Irish showman to be made Vice-President of a European Guild, a role where he proudly represented Ireland across borders.
A true pioneer, a gentleman, and a showman through and through.
